WBHS runners turn in 'fantastic' effort

A perfect day for a cross country meet produced an almost perfect performance for the Winder-Barrow High School program.

The Lady Bulldoggs took first at Saturday’s Mercer University RunFit Sports Invitational as all five runners were in the top 20, with four in the top 10. The WBHS boys were second with each team member excelling on the course.

“It was a fantastic run,” said coach Michael Lofton. “Everything fell into place. We had great weather. You couldn’t ask for a better morning to run.”

Amanda Cope took first for the WBHS girls with an impressive time of 19:29. Caitlin Connell was third in 19:58. Whitley Kennedy (fourth) and Anna Dean (sixth) were also in the top 10.

Coach Amanda Partee-Manders said Darcy Potts, Amber Duffy, Isabelle Martin, Kiana Perez, Hannah Bartz and Amber Palmero all set personal bests for 2011.

“With each race times are dropping. I’m happy with how the team is performing,” Partee-Manders said.

For the Bulldoggs, Josiah Bennett was second in 16:58. Three WBHS boys were in the 17:00 range.

Skyler Lowe finished the event in 17:42 followed by Chris Cope (17:56) and Shane Davis (17:56.9).

Alex Martinez was 19th overall.

There were 10 girls teams competing with 15 boys.

“We had a very good week at practice leading up to the event,” Lofton said. “I am very excited about that because the kids will see how much practice pays off.”

First Presbyterian Day of Macon was first in the boys division.
