FOOTBALL: WBHS dealt heartbreaking loss

Winder held all the momentum early in the first half Friday. Riden scored three touchdowns in a 160-second span to put the Bulldogs up 21-0 with 11 minutes to go in the second quarter. The running back carried the ball in from one yard out with 1:40 to go in the opening period. The Bulldogs recovered a Red Raider fumble on the next possession. And Riden raced 27 yards for a score with 28 seconds left in the opening period. Winder then recovered an onside kick, with Riden carrying the ball in from three yards out just one minute into the second quarter.

Down 21-0, Madison County faced third and 11 at their own 26. That’s when Alex Jordan hit Trae Burton for a 38-yard reception, a play that turned the momentum towards Madison County, setting up a see-saw affair the rest of the way. The Red Raiders scored on a six-yard run, an 11-yard pass and a 53-yard interception return to knot the score at 21 at intermission.

Riden raced 80 yards on the opening play from scrimmage in the third quarter, putting Winder up 28-21. Madison County answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass. Winder’s Dante Jones took the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to put the Bulldoggs up 35-28.

But Madison County’s Burton scored on a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and carried the ball in from three-yards out in overtime to give Madison County the victory.
