Quarterback Cody Streetman scored the go-ahead touchdown on a five-yard run to put Commerce ahead of Franklin Co. 10-7 with less than four minutes to play.
A strong Tiger defense halted the Lions' final series in thrilling fashion at Tiger Field. Facing a second-and-10 from about midfield, senior Jake Vaughn sacked Lions' quarterback Kevin Harris for a six-yard loss with about a minute to play.
Two incomplete passes followed to end the game, with Streetman taking a knee to drain the remaining 50 seconds on the clock.
"It couldn't have ended better," Vaughn said, of the sack. "I just looked up and got him. Any one of us could've gotten him."
The victory marks coach Marvin Justice's first win as head coach at Commerce (1-1).
He called the initial triumph a "relief" and credited the Tigers' intense week of practices and unified determination to improve from last week's lost to rival Jefferson as the key difference on Friday.
"Every play was big tonight," Justice said.
Late TD and defensive stand push Commerce to first victory, 10-7
