BCHS cross country opens season Thursday

Run, run, run then run some more. "Run ‘til you puke" is their team motto.

The Banks County High School cross county teams have been doing just that in preparation for their first meet on Sept. 1 at Habersham Central High School in Mt. Airy.

During a recent practice Coach Kelly McDuffie sent the runners out on the course to get an idea of how they were doing.

The top Leopard runners were Tuan Pham, Jake Schaefer, Harris Day, Graham White, Dylon Bonilla, Gatlin Boswell and Bobby Nguyen. Francisco Hurtado is expected to return to the lineup after recovering from a recent sickness. The top Lady Lepoard runners were Carli Broome, Hannah brown, Maggie McCoy, MaKayla Hewell and Marissa Lewis. The girls team is young with three of the top five being ninth graders for BCHS.

"After the meet on Thursday we will have a better understanding of where we stand,” McDuffie said. “Our course is so hard that it is hard to judge how well someone is going to run. We have lots of hills and some are rough.”

The school records in cross country have not been broken in several years but with quite a few quality runners making new strides the records may change this season.

Ivan Diaz holds the boys varsity school record with a time of 17:22, setting that mark in 2009.

Lacey Bennett holds the girls varsity record with a time of 22:54, which she established in 2006.

"Everyone is working super hard to break a record this year," said McDuffie.

Friday night before the varsity football game the BCHS cross country program will provide the tailgate meal at the school.
