Jackson County opened practice Monday as far ahead offensively and defensively as it has ever been in Billy Kirk’s five years on the job, according to the coach.
Kirk points to continuity with the coaching staff – no changes in offensive or defensive schemes – and the amount of work logged during voluntary summer workouts.
“We were able to go out there and run our offense and defense correctly on day one,” Kirk said.
Overall, Kirk graded the day at a B-.
The coach noted the performances of River Bryant, who Kirk said is “going to be a good player for us at tight end,” and running backs Daivon Ledford and Dustin Scott.
Kirk also said defensive lineman Chris Foster stood out on day one.
Though temperatures soared on Monday, Jackson County avoided heat-related problems.
“We take care of our kids with plenty of hydration, plenty of water and plenty of breaks,” Kirk said.
Jackson County has three weeks from this Friday to polish its offensive and defensive schemes and install its special teams. The Panther staff is still evaluating personnel at some positions.
“Once we get all those pieces in place, I think we’ll put a good product on the field,” Kirk said.
Jackson County will scrimmage Athens Christian Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on the road. The Panthers' opener is Aug. 26 at Johnson at 7:30 p.m.
