JACKSON COUNTY hopes a mix of experienced players coupled with an influx of talent rising from the junior varsity will lead to a .500 or better finish in 2011.
Senior outside hitters Rachel Smith and Jasmine Williams both return, bringing experience to the team this fall. But coach Crystal Colley points to a crop of promising young players that should pay big dividends this year.
“They’re strong senior leaders,” Colley said of Smith and Williams, “but we also have a lot of JV players that have moved up that we’re excited about that have really stepped up at the camps.”
Those key varsity newcomers include Kelsey Zimmer (setter), Dorothy Maisonneuve (middle hitter) and Jaycee Caylor (middle hitter).
As for other returning varsity players, Jackson County welcomes back Jasmine Momin and Samantha Van Fleet. Colley notes that with Jackson County changing some of its schemes this year, Momin will play either libero spot or right side hitter.
Jackson County – which opens the season Aug. 13 at East Jackson – has been busy this summer after coming off an 11-win campaign in 2010.
The Panthers practiced three times a week and made their first-ever trip to a large college camp, trekking to Clemson for a four-day stay – something that Colley said was a big deal for the program. There, team picked up three victories.
“That was a really good team-bonding experience,” Colley said. “Most of my varsity players went and we got to play some very competitive teams there.”
Jackson County also participated in a training camp at Lakeview where it tied in each of its three scrimmages there.
Jackson County’s goal last year was to finish above .500 but fell short of that with an 11-24 mark. The Panthers aim to reach that plateau this year.
“With this team, we should hopefully have a winning season,” Colley said. “That would be the main goal … With the teams we’re looking at in our area, we want to be ranked in our subarea in at least in the top two going into the area tournament.”
In the meantime, Jackson County’s program continues to grow. Colley expects more players this year – about 35 – to tryout for the program as opposed to 25 a year ago. Colley also feels the talent level is up.
“I feel like each year, we keep getting better,” Colley said. “And I feel like this year we’re going to be better than last year. So that’s a plus for us. We continue to improve. Last year, I think we had 11 wins, so hopefully this year we surpass that.”

As parents we understand and admire the talent, drive and success you have continued to instill into each of our players/students life.
A special appreciation to you, your coaching staff and family. We all see you continue to fulfill each girls passion & drive for their future & good sportsmanship. I'm sure there are many hours of personal time you have given to these amazing returning and up coming JCCHS VB players so they can achieve the success as a great team in which you strive so hard for.
For sure we give a "shout out" to ALL of our amazing JCCHS Volleyball Players for the dedication, success and team bonding. Yes, the players giving up so much of their summer and personal life. Many of these girls hit the VB courts & gym workouts just a few days after our 2010-2011 school year ended to start the summer VB program for hours of daily workouts, distant road trips, practice time, games, scrimmages, out of town camps, college training camps, fund raisers and more. Not to mention the fun memories these ladies have to last a life time. There is a unique bond with our players. Our daughter Jasmine Momin; a JCCHS 2011/2012 Sophomore & VB player, we are proud of you Jasmine and support your dream with school, sports and your college future.
Listening to Jasmine - aka "MOE”...
Coach Colley has been such a great roll model, teacher, VB coach, motivator, and gave Moe reason to reach for the moon with her desire to be better each and everyday on & off the VB court. I listen to the excitement from her voice with just everyday simple stuff, to hear her be excited, to watch her "game on" attitude, her drive, her laughter & tears, her accomplishments and how happy to have found a sport to really love and enjoy.
I have watched her grow with confidence and never complained about much of anything on or off the courts.
Coach Colley, we admire the strong connection you have with your players and students.
I wish the JCCHS Panthers Volleyball Team much success in 2011/2012 school year.
Panther ladies, go the extra mile, drive your success, have faith, stay teachable and you will be on TOP of YOUR GAME ALWAYS!
Respectfully,
Joe and Celeste Momin - aka
"Proud parents of a JCCHS Panthers VB Player"
