Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis doesn’t make changes to his coaching staff often but a recent addition has the makings of benefiting the program in terms of experience.
Davis recently announced the hiring of former Lakeside DeKalb High School head coach Thomas Cox to the Wildcat staff.
"He actually interviewed with us in April but we only recently had everything work out where he could come aboard,” Davis said. “I contacted him again to see if he was still interested and he was.”
Stability has been part of the reason the AHS program has been successful in recent seasons.
Cox's hiring has been approved by the Barrow County Board of Education.
“We have been fortunate that during the past six seasons, a bulk of our coaching staff has been together,” Davis said. “My approach is if one of my coaches leaves for a promotion, be it a coordinator’s job or a head coaching job then that’s fine. If they leave for a lateral move, then I’m doing something wrong and have a problem.”
Summer workouts continue for the Wildcats. Preseason practice begins Aug. 1 with the 2011 season opener set for Aug. 26 at Habersham Central in the first of 10 8-AAAA games.
