The Commerce Middle School Tigers did something last week that their high school counterparts haven’t done in two years.
They beat Jefferson.
The Tigers opened their 2008 campaign with a 36-19 thrashing of their cross-county rivals last Thursday. They’ll host Franklin County this Thursday at 5:30, looking for their second win.
The Tigers and Dragons exchanged first-quarter touchdowns, with the Tigers getting on the board first with a 37-yard run by Thomas McMillan, followed by a two-point PAT run by Micah Eason to go up 8-0. They tacked on another on an 11-yard pass from Eason to McMillian and converted on the PAT with the same combination to go up 16-14 after the first quarter.
“We both scored two touchdowns. We converted on our extra points and they didn’t,” said Coach Jimmy Stephenson.
Commerce moved to 22-12 by halftime, scoring on a 23-yard pass from Eason to Marquavius Little (the PAT failed).
The Tigers continued to roll in the third stanza. Eason ran 26 yards for the first TD, then Terrick Ramsey galloped 58 yards to pay dirt in the fourth quarter, after which Eason ran in the PAT.
Jefferson added a touchdown and PAT in the fourth quarter.
