BASEBALL: Rangers select Pentecost in seventh round

“It’s a feeling you really can’t describe,” he told the Barrow Journal Tuesday shortly after receiving the news. Just hearing my name was something. Once I realized it was me, I couldn’t believe it.”

The Rangers would like to use Pentecost as a catcher. The WBHS graduate has not decided yet whether he will sign with the team or continue his baseball career at Kennesaw State, where he signed in previous weeks. He will make the decision with family members based primarily on the amount of the signing bonus and what can be worked out contract-wise.

Coaches from Kennesaw State have already been in contact with Pentecost and told him they will support his decision regardless. Pentecost is continuing to recover from an elbow injury and is involved in therapy. He is not playing baseball this summer to give his arm a chance to heal completely.

“It’s something every kid who plays baseball wants,” Pentecost said. “The whole thing has been amazing to be a part of.”

WBHS baseball coach Brian Smith delivered the news to his players, who were actually closer to Texas this week than Pentecost.

The Bulldoggs are in Mississippi for a camp and competition and the players let out a loud cheer when the news was told to them.

“We are very proud of him,” Smith said. “With his injury we really weren’t sure what to expect. To get drafted that high really shows they think a lot of him.”
