The Banks County High School Lady Leopards softball team will get a jump on the upcoming 2011 season when they compete as a summer league team next month.
Coach Dean Goodwin said the team is set to begin practice and will continue working until the Georgia High School Association “dead week,” in which no activities are allowed the first week of July.
Two years ago the program won more than 20 games. The win total slipped some last fall but Goodwin said injuries played a factor.
“We lost some to graduation but we have a good core group back,” the coach said. “This region is the toughest top bottom I believe. It’s helps you to get an early start and look for an indication of how you might be.”
Three freshmen were in the starting lineup in 2011. While that made for a young squad, Goodwin said that varsity experience will prove beneficial down the road, including this upcoming season.
“I will expect them to step up a little more this year,” the coach said.
