FOOTBALL: Preparation in fast gear for Wildcats

While Aug. 26 may seem a long way off to some, for high school football coaches across the state, it’s only a blink away.

Apalachee High School coach Shane Davis knows this all to well. With spring practice now over, the Wildcats have already jumped into the summer phase of their offseason work and are making the most of every day as the 2011 season quickly approaches on the horizon.

“It was a good spring for the most part,” Davis said recently. “You always go in trying to get certain things done. You have only so much time you can work during the spring but we took advantage of every day. It was good to be back on the field working to get better and seeing who will be able to help us this fall.”

Davis admitted that the 2010 season, especially the way it concluded, was not acceptable for AHS standards. Despite a strong start to the season, the Wildcats missed the playoffs after finishing 6-4. That has only increased the desire of the coaching staff and players to get back to championship form.

“It’s not easy and it will take a lot of hard work,” the coach said. “The coaches and players realize this.”
