The “interim” tag has been removed from Jerry King’s title.
After being called upon to fill in for the remainder of the recent school year as athletic director following the resignation of Blair Armstrong, King has been approved by the Banks County Board of Education as the permanent person for the job. The move was made official last week.
“When Coach Armstrong left, I expressed an interest in the position,” King said. “Things just fell into place. I’ve always had an interest in this leadership role.”
This is King’s first job as a high school athletic director. He will continue in his role as the Lady Leopard basketball coach.
King, who came to BCHS prior to the 2007-2008 school year said Sunday night he planned on meeting with all coaches Monday.
“We are going to make sure we have everything in place and have everything lined up for the upcoming school year,” King said.
In his new role, King said he has three main objectives:
•to make the athletic budget process more transparent.
•to build comradery among the coaches.
•to encourage student-athletes to compete in more than just one sport.
Some coaching spots remain open on the football and boys basketball staffs. King said he believes the football coaching staff will be complete by the end of June as time is critical now with summer workouts beginning and fall practice arriving in a couple of months.
Even though he has officially been in the position a short amount of time, King said he has dived into the role.
“I’ve already been introduced to it in many ways,” King said. “There is a lot involved. However, I look forward to doing all I can to help the student-athletes and Banks County High School as a whole. I appreciate the opportunity the school leaders have given me.”
What a kick in the head all the programs would have had if he was given the job.
