TRACK: Cope earns two state medals

Winning state medals is nothing new for Amanda Cope.

The Winder-Barrow High School distance runner placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run last week in Albany for Class AAAA. Cope set a new school record with a time of 5:17.22 and once again returned to the winner’s podium. The time was also a personal best for the WBHS junior.

Anna Boles of Lakeside was the winner of the 1,600-meter run in 4:57.42.

Cope also finished eighth in the 3,200-meter run (11:45) although the runner was not pleased with her performance, coach Jennifer Blevins said.

WBHS seniors DeIsha Treadwell and Brittany Witt competed in Albany. Treadwell was 13th in the 100-meter dash and Witt cleared 5-8 in the high jump.

Lady Bulldogg team members Laura Beth Brown (pole vault), Delorean Itabiyi (discus) and Anna Dean (3,200-meter run) also competed at state but did not qualify for the finals in their respective events. All three will return next spring for the WBHS girls.

Cope’s 2011 state finish followed up her performance in Albany last spring where she was sixth in the 3,200-meter and fifth in the 1,600-meter.
