TRACK: Simonton breaks personal record at state

Simonton was correct.

When all was said and done last Thursday afternoon in Jefferson, Simonton had placed fourth in AAAA in the discus setting a new school record with a throw of 159-1, breaking the old mark 153-4.

“I felt I could do it,” Simonton said after the competition. “I wanted to finish in the top five and to be able to accomplish that means a lot.”

AHS track coach Matt Sorrells said during the week he and Simonton talked about the possibility of setting a new school record.

“We looked at all the throws of the other competitors and felt fourth place was obtainable,” Sorrells said. “That was his goal even before the year began. I am very proud of him. That is what happens when you are willing to put in the hard work it takes. It was a great day for him.”
