In the girls’ competition, Mountain Brook High School finished in first place with 37 points. The average time of the team’s top five runners was 19:40 and the total time was 1:38:19.
The Lady Hawks finished with 475 points. Brittany Westmoreland had the top time for Mill Creek, completing the race in 20:55. Alicia Connolly followed with a time of 21:16. Rounding out the top five for Mill Creek were Megan Steinocher (21:44), Amber Yi (22:53) and Heather Peterman (22:53).
The Lady Hawks’ top five runners averaged 21:57 with a total time of 1:49:41.
“The girls ran their hearts out on Saturday,” said Mill Creek girls’ varsity head coach Tom Kutter. “It was tough day to run. I think we can run better”
Mountain Brook High School also won the boys’ competition, finishing the race with 134 points and an average top five time of 17:02. The total time for the top five was 1:25:06.
Mill Creek finished the event with 514 points.
The Hawks were led by Austin Boetje with his time of 17:52. Andres Tostes finished second for Mill Creek with a time of 18:04. Nick Bava (18:12), Steven Zwick (18:16) and Tim Heffner (18:20) also finished in the top five.
Mill Creek’s average time for the top five runners was 18:09 and the total time was 1:30:44.
Mill Creek head boys’ coach Andy Christie said he was pleased with the meet overall.
“We got stuck behind the crowd a little bit, but as this year's top guys get more experience in varsity races, they will learn how to navigate those big races,” Christie said. “But for our first big race in September, I'm pleased. I was particularly happy with Andres Tostes, and how many people he caught over the course of the race.”
Mill Creek’s junior varsity team will compete this Thursday, September 11 at Little Mulberry Park. The race is set to begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the varsity girls will travel to Carrollton, Georgia for an invitational race.
The varsity’s next meet will be on Saturday, September 20 at the Gwinnett County meet in Duluth.
