MAKE no mistake, longtime coach T. McFerrin puts a premium on the 10 days the state grants for spring football practice.
“I think it’s invaluable. I think that’s why Georgia football is so good – because we have spring football,” McFerrin said, noting that some states don’t have it.
In fact, McFerrin noted that “sometimes teams are made in the spring.” Those 10 days allow a team more time to stress fundamentals and get more physical than a typical practice week during the season.
“You can hit a little more and work on blocking and tackling a little bit more,” McFerrin said.
Jefferson will practice though today (Wednesday), then take the rest of the week off for the state track meet. The Dragons will resume spring workouts this coming Monday and practice through Friday. Jefferson will then wrap up spring drills Monday and Tuesday (May 16-17) of the following week. The Dragons won’t hold a full-fledged spring game to conclude the spring session but will hold a scrimmage May 17.
“We’ll work on a lot of fundamentals and try to get better on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game,” McFerrin said of the spring session.
Jefferson returns some starters from last year, including quarterback Bryant Shirrefffs, Cole Givens, Will Puckett, Dustin Casey, Collin Anthony, Kevin Selleck, Carson Newman, Wesley Simonton, Stephen Chambers, Cain Finch, Asher Orr, Drequn Swell, Andre Daniel and Chandler Schlutow.
