THE Jefferson girls’ golf team shot a 200 at state Monday to finish seventh in Class AA and a couple spots shy of its postseason goal.
The Lady Dragons were disappointed to place outside of the top five but took some consolation in the top 10 showing at the state tournament, which was played at Madison’s Long Shadow Golf Club.
“We weren’t too far off where we’d thought we’d finish,” said coach Tom Parker, whose team finished no. 3 last year.
Hanna Chapman shot a 92 Monday to once again lead Jefferson. After posting a 49 on the front nine, Chapman rallied with a 43 on the back nine.
Paige Pate also scored, shooting a 108. Others playing but not scoring were Kara Perry (109) and Anna Alexander (118).
Vidalia won the Class AA state title. Greater Atlanta Christian finished as runners-up.
Parker noted the toughness of the Long Shadow course.
“You got penalized for bad shots … That cost us a couple of times,” Parker said.
The coach said the season wasn’t without its merits despite the fact that it didn’t end with a top five finish in Class AA.
“It wasn’t a total loss,” Parker said. “We got in the top 10 … We’re still competitive and playing hard.”
Meanwhile, the future looks bright for 2012. Jefferson loses just one golfer to graduation, Perry, as the program looks to return to top-five form.
“We’re going to be OK,” Parker said.
