POINTS were in scarce supply last Tuesday for Jefferson against the state’s top-rated team.
The Lady Dragon tennis squad (6-7) fell at no. 2 singles and no. 1 and 2 doubles Tuesday in a 3-0 first-round state tournament loss to no.-1 ranked Blessed Trinity (15-4) last Tuesday on the road.
In addition to being no. 1 in Class AA, Blessed Trinity was the no. 1 seed coming out of a loaded Region 6-AA.
“They were very good – a very good team,” coach Mike Paul said. “I’m proud of our kids. They played hard but just got beat by a better team today (last Tuesday).”
Taylor Bost lost 6-0, 6-0 at no. 2 singles while Chelsea Runkel and Amanda Burgamy fell 6-0, 6-0 at no. 1 doubles and Grace Main and Abi Meusse dropped their match at no. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0.
Neither Bell Blankenship (no. 1 singles) or Tristan McGarity (no. 3 singles) completed their matches officially.
Jefferson’s fate was familiar to that of many of its fellow Region 8-AA schools in the state tournament.
Out of the eight schools that advanced to the first round (boys and girls combined), only one team from 8-AA – North Oconee’s girls’ – won their first-round matchup against Region 6-AA.
