The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcat golf team was not able to duplicate its success from a season ago at the Region 8-AAAA tournament.
As a result, AHS fell short Monday of qualifying for state during the region competition at Double Oaks Course in Commerce.
Sophomore Shelby Hanna was sick and although she competed Monday, she was not up to her normal level of play finishing with a round of 92.
“She had scored a 78 on the same course just days earlier,” coach Kevin Morris said. “I’m surprised she was able to play. Her family had been battling being sick and it hit her. She did all she could.”
The Lady Wildcats were third overall at region, finishing one place out of state.
Megan Banner was the second low scorer for the AHS girls.
Madison County won region while Habersham Central was second. Cortney Boggs was the low medalist for Madison County with a 73.
The AHS boys were fourth at region led by Ritchie Etheredge, Joseph Morris, Doug Fussell and Drew Hixson.
The Winder-Barrow High School girls were fifth with the boys finishing seventh.
Outside of the top two teams, Justin Donaldson and Kayla Beshears of WBHS recorded the lowest individual scores and, as a result, will get the chance to compete at the state tournament May 2 in Columbus.
