Madison County’s girls’ golf team found the fairway, found the greens and found the region trophy — again.
The girls’ golf team won the region championship for the third straight year. This tournament was held at Double Oaks Golf Course in Commerce.
“Winning the third region title in a row is a testament to how committed these girls are to the game,” said coach Doug Kesler. “We posted the three lowest scores of the day. With Cortney, Kelsey and Katie Jane, we have 3 girls who are playing pretty much year-round. They deserve all the credit and praise.”
Cortney Boggs was the region low medalist with a score of 73. This is one of the lowest scores ever recorded in region 8AAAA girls’ golf tournament, and this is an 18-hole school record for Madison County.
Boggs tallied four birdies, nine pars five bogeys. She hit 15 greens in regulation and fired a 36 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine.
“Cortney had an outstanding round at the Region Tournament. She was even coming to the last hole. To go out and shoot a 1 over 73 in the region tournament is something she will remember the rest of her life,” Kesler said.
“Cortney is different from most elite high school golfers in the fact that she has competed at the highest level in another sport which is softball,” said Kesler. “She has faced the pressure of being in the pitcher's circle with all eyes on her in the region and state tournaments. She pitched in the state tournament this fall with 500 people around watching her. The pressure of competing at that level and having to overcome adversity have helped her to become a better golfer.”
Katie Jane Phillips finished with an 83 and Kelsey Hochstetler had a score of 87. These three scores were the top three scores in the tournament. Anna Tolbert finished with a 109. Megan Boswell scored an 89 as a non-qualifying marker.
“We have won three region titles in a row and four of the last five and those three and especially Cortney and Kelsey being seniors have set a standard for the girls following them,” Kesler said. “No one wants to be the group that breaks the streak. With Katie Jane, Megan Boswell, and Anna Tolbert returning next year the prospects for four in a row are very attainable. The deciding factor will be if they are willing to make the commitment that Cortney and Kelsey have made the last few years.”
Madison County’s total score was 156. Habersham County took second place with a total score of 177. These two teams will now advance to the state tournament in Columbus at the Columbus Country Club May 2.
