Banks County’s baseball season is drawing to a close as the boys were scheduled to play Union County last Friday and finish out the regular season on Monday against Westside at Commerce.
After losing to Fannin County, 8-5, last Wednesday, the diamond Leopards prepared to host Union County, April 15.
With storms blowing in, the team attempted to get in the game against the number two team in the 8-AA North sub-region. The game proceeded through four innings with Union County pulling to a 5-3 lead before play was suspended due to lighting alerts.
The game was rescheduled to Tuesday along with the postponed Senior Night honors.
Tuesday morning the game was canceled, as Union County withdrew. The game does not impact current region standings.
As of press time a firm schedule had not been decided for Senior Night, but according to administrators, the Senior Night would be held along with an alternate game at the end of the week or the beginning of next week.
There are three seniors on the team: Jessy Hudgins, Seth McEntire and Eli Autry.
On Monday, the boys headed to Commerce and played Westside, a 2-AAA team from Macon.
In a six-inning shutout, all three of the seniors homered to fuel the the win 11-0 over Westside.
The win improves the team to 7-11 on the season.
McEntire pitched all six innings and led the offense with two, three-run home runs. Hudgins hit a two-run homer and Autry hit a two-run home run.
While the win Monday night helped improve the overall record, the Leopards are done in region play as the boys end 6-8, and fifth in the sub-region.
Moving on to the region tournament, north sub-region leader Fannin County takes on Jefferson, which knocked out rival Jackson County last week for fourth place on the south side.
Union County takes on North Oconee; Dawson County takes on Hart County; and Rabun County faces Elbert County in the first round of the region tourney Friday. All contests are double headers at each of the higher ranked teams’ locations.
While a playoff run is out this season, the Leopards are not done on the diamond yet.
The boys are still scheduled to play a doubleheader at Jackson County next week. Set for April 29, the two fifth-place cross-region teams will play first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the second game.
