Madison County’s diamond Red Raiders added one win over the past four games.
The 21-4, seven inning victory last week was the high point of the team’s spring break play after Madison County opened the week with a 6-2 loss to Habersham Central, followed by last Friday’s game where Loganville blanked the Red Raiders 7-0.
Returning to the diamond this week, Madison County hosted Flowery Branch Monday. The Falcons barely slipped past the Red Raiders in the 6-4 game, leaving Madison County 9-6 overall. Full stats from the Flowery Branch game will be in next week's Madison County Journal.
Wednesday the team was on the road taking on Apalachee. Results were unavailable from that game at press time.
Coming up, the boys host Salem Friday at 5:55 p.m. Salem is currently 8-8 overall.
In the first game of spring break, Madison County fell to Habersham Central, March 28.
Habersham won 6-2 after scoring a pair in the second inning, one run in the fourth and three more to secure the win in the fifth.
Madison County wouldn’t get a hit until the sixth inning as Haden Martin singled, then the Red Raiders wouldn’t get on the board until the next inning. An infield single from Dylan Chandler was followed by Zach Escoe reaching on error and Jordan Thomas walked to load up the bags. Daniel Townsend brought around Chandler and reached on his own infield single. Steven Tiller hit a far right sac fly to score Escoe.
Aaron Benner started on the mound, staying in for three innings and an out, allowing three unearned runs off two hits, walking four and sitting down one. Alex Jordan came in for relief, recording four outs, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks. He fanned two batters. Lance Chandler recorded the game’s final four outs with no runs and no hits, walking two and striking out two.
The Red Raiders would add one to the win column in the next game, pulling out a big win over Clarke Central, 21-4.
In what was a close game until the seventh inning, Clarke Central held the lead after scoring 3-1 after the first inning. Madison County responded with runs in the second - scoring four - and in the fifth inning to hold an 8-3 lead. Both teams plated one on either side of the sixth inning.
The seventh inning was the final nail in the coffin for Clarke Central, as Madison County brought across 13 runs off five hits, nine walks and one sac fly.
Matt Savage earned his fourth win on the mound, pitching six innings giving up four runs, three hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
At the plate, Jarrett Seawright led the team going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Martin went 2-for-5 with six RBIs. Other hitting included: D.Chandler 2-4, 2 RBIs; Escoe 2-5, 1 RBI; Tiller 2-3, 2 RBIs; J. Ben Hardman 2-3, 4 RBIs; Thomas 1-3, 2 RBI and Townsend 1-3.
Following the win, Madison County was disappointed last Friday as Loganville blanked the Red Raiders 7-0.
