Fans and former competitors at the old Athens Speedway will gather for the second annual Athens Speedway reunion at South Jackson Elementary School to remember the track. The facility opened in 1959 and was a mainstay for North Georgia racers up until it closed in 1992.

The second annual Athens Speedway reunion is slated to be held Saturday, April 9 at South Jackson Elementary School.

The event will feature former drivers, car owners and car builders from the old Athens Speedway, which operated from 1959 until the track closed in 1992. Also on hand will be former track officials, announcers and other local racing celebrities.

Vintage racecars, including many that raced at Athens Speedway, will be on display.

Former competitors, fans and racing aficionados are invited to attend and to bring their scrapbooks and memories. Refreshments will be available for purchase and there will be gospel music entertainment.
