Jefferson golfers beat local rivals
Jefferson’s boys shot a 164 in a tri-match last Wednesday (March 23) to beat Commerce (184) and East Jackson (205) at Double Oaks Golf Club. Josh Flowers led the Dragons with a round of 38. He tied with Commerce’s Austin Patterson for low medalist.
Blair Cain (41), Isaac Kelly (42) and Jacob Prince (43) rounded out the scoring.
Austin Beauchamp led East Jackson with a 47.
GIRLS’ GOLF
•JEFFERSON 95, NORTH OCONEE 116: Hanna Chapman shot a 45 to lead the Lady Dragons to a 21-stroke win over North Oconee Tuesday at home. Kara Perry added a 50.
Prior to that, Jefferson won a tri-match against two intra-county foes, shooting a 90 at Double Oaks. Chapman shot a 43 and Perry tallied a 47. Commerce finished with a 105, lead by Haley Chestnut (50). East Jackson shot a 114 led by Victoria Nixon (56).

•JEFFERSON 2, WINDER-BARROW 2: Camila Hernandez scored both goals for Jefferson as the Lady Dragons tied 8-AAAA Winder-Barrow Tuesday night on the road.
•JEFFERSON 2, EAST JACKSON 0: Taylor Cramsey scored two goals off headers from Carolyn Carreno corner kicks in the Lady Dragons’ Friday win against rival East Jackson at home.
“The ladies practiced it during the week, and wow, practice does pay off,” coach Todd Parker said. “I am very proud of the ladies. They came into the game wanting to play soccer and that they did. Their heads were defiantly in game. “
Parker also made note of the defensive effort in the shutout.
“Let’s not forget about our goalie, Jordan Slappey,” he said. “She did an awesome job, keeping numerous shots out of our goal. All in all the girls played a great game.”
•FRANKLIN CO. 4, JACKSON CO. 3: Sydney Baird, Gabbi Kastner and Katie Phillips all scored for Jackson County Tuesday, but the Lady Panthers fell to Region 8-AAA Franklin County on the road.
•NORTH OCONEE 3, JACKSON CO. 0: Jackson County lost on the road Friday to the subregion leaders.

•WINDER-BARROW 2, JEFFERSON 1: J.P. Valentine scored Jefferson’s lone goal in its Tuesday road loss to Region 8-AAAA Winder-Barrow.
•JEFFERSON 3, EAST JACKSON 1: Nicholas Parker, Stephen Chambers and Hugo Tello all provided scores in the Dragons’ 3-1 victory over rival East Jackson Friday at home.
Coach Jacob Marble said he was pleased with his team’s performance overall, though it missed some scoring chances in the second half.
“The guys played a very solid first half,” Marble said. “We had some breakdowns in the second half which led to their only goal, and we should have had more goals seeing as we had numerous opportunities to score.”
•JACKSON CO. 3, FRANKLIN CO. 2: Jackson County’s boys picked up a non-region win over Region 8-AAA’s Franklin County Tuesday behind two goals from Patrick Ventura and one from Spencer Feltner. Coach Joseph Brubaker noted the play of John Gee defensively.
•NORTH OCONEE 10, JACKSON CO. 0: The Panthers took one on the chin Friday in a road loss to Region 8-AA South’s first-place team and Class AA’s fourth-ranked team.
BOYS’ GOLF
•JACKSON CO. 164, HART CO. 168: Following the Panthers’ record performance Thursday (see page 1B for story), Jackson County chalked up a huge win over Hart County led by freshman York Delloyd’s round of 38. Delloyd earned low-medalist honors.
Jared Scott added a 40, Thomas Whitley shot a 42 and River Bryant rounded out the scoring with a 44. Colton Standridge also played, shooting a 46.
“We are playing with a ton of confidence,” coach Warren Standridge said.

•JEFFERSON 64, NORTH OCONEE 63, ELBERT CO. 43: Jefferson’s girls pulled out a one-point victory Wednesday at home against North Oconee for their third win of the season.
The Lady Dragons got first-place finishes from Karla Carreno (high jump, 4-8; long jump, 15-08.25; 100 meters, 13.45 seconds) and Kasey McDonald (discus, 101-03; shot put, 33-03.5).
•JACKSON CO. 78, EAST JACKSON 55, RABUN CO. 40 (LAST WEEK): The Lady Panthers won their third meet of the season last Tuesday (March 22) at East Jackson, edging the host Lady Eagles by 23 points.
The Lady Panthers got first-place finishes from Victoria Fontana (high jump, 4-09; triple jump, 29-10.5), Mariah Spry (100 meters, 13.31 seconds), Rachel Smith (400 meters, 67.5 seconds), Brittany Aikens (3,200 meters, 12.44 seconds; 1,600 meters, 6:11) and Emily Elrod (200 meters, 28.9 seconds).
Jackson County’s 4 x 100 meter relay team (Elrod, Smith, Krishawnda Ledford and Spry) also picked up a win with a time of 54.34 seconds.

•ELBERT CO., 78, NORTH OCONEE 56, JEFFERSON 33:
The Jefferson boys’ track team placed last in a three-team home meet last Wednesday (March 23). The Dragons got first-place finishes from Mason Hamrick in the pole vault (12-06), Derrick Perkins (300 meters, 42.09 seconds) and Matt Deremer (3,200 meters, 12:28). In all, the Dragons accumulated 31 additional season best performances to cap off 3 meets in the past four day stretch.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
•NORTH OCONEE 4, JACKSON CO. 1: Mafan provided the lone victory for the Jackson County girls in their season finale Tuesday on the road against first-place North Oconee. The Lady Panthers’ no. 1 singles player won in a match that went to a tie-breaker. She finished the season unbeaten. The Jackson County girls finished fifth in the subregion and won’t advance to the region tournament.
BOYS’ TENNIS
•NORTH OCONEE 5, JACKSON CO. 0: Subregion leading North Oconee handed the Panthers a shut out loss to end the season. Jackson County finished the year fifth in the subregion, so it won’t qualify for the region tournament.
