After some disappointing outings of late, the Apalachee High School baseball team was entering a phase of the season where it needed to get on track.
With two wins last week, that mission, at least temporarily, was accomplished.
Coach Mike Cavey’s Wildcats defeated Heritage 4-2 Friday and Clarke Central 10-3 last Wednesday to improve to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA North going into action this week.
“Things finally went our way a little bit,” Cavey said. “In the game against Clarke Central, we were finally able to score some runs. It was good to get those wins. After winning Wednesday, we seemed to have more energy Friday when we took the field.”
Caleb Austin earned the victory Friday against Heritage working the first four innings. Ryan Shorter took the save working in relief. Austin struck out the side in the fifth to help preserve a 3-1 lead at the time.
Ronney Miller had the power against Clarke Central, connecting on a grand slam and a solo shot against the Gladiators.
Clint Ashe was the winner pitcher allowing just two earned runs. Ashe recorded seven strikeouts before Stephen Adair closed the door in the seventh.
“We didn’t play well early Wednesday,” Cavey said. “We had a six-run inning which helped propel us to the win. We played well defensively in our games Wednesday and Friday. That’s something I hope we will be able to continue. It was good to have some success. Hopefully, that will continue to carry over.”
