It was a one game week for the Banks County boys soccer team last week.
The Leopards took on cross-region rival Jefferson last Tuesday, and the boys controlled the tempo for the win, 1-0 over Jefferson.
“We finally controlled the tempo of a game,” said coach Mike Boomer.
Jefferson was 3-2 coming into the match and were just off a win over Elbert County. Boomer said the Dragons were a much improved team from what Banks County had seen in the past.
The Leopards were also battling some injury change ups.
“We switched some things up due to injury - moving defender Mark Loggins up to striker at the start of the game,” Boomer said.
It proved to be a good strategy as Loggins would score the game point on the night off an assist from Koewy Hue.
Jefferson had previously been scoring on average two or three points for wins.
“The defense played their best game of the season in this shut-out win,” said Boomer.
Banks County went on to play Rabun County in a sub-region match Tuesday night.
Rabun County turned up the heat and scorched the Leopards 5-0.
Banks County’s next challenge will be the undefeated Union County Panthers in another sub-region match this Friday. Banks County is now 3-7; 0-3 in sub-region play, facing 9-0; 2-0 Union.
Friday’s game is on the road for the Leopards starting at 7 p.m., following the girls game.
Lady Leopards
While the boys had a good turn over Jefferson, the Lady Leopards were swept by the cross-region opponent, 6-0. The loss marked the team’s eighth straight loss, but the Lady Leopards’ continued perseverance paid off Tuesday night, as the Lady Leopards moved into the win column with a sub-region victory over Rabun County, 1-0.
Banks County’s girls now prepare for another sub-region battle over the 8-1; 2-1 Union County girls this Friday. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Union County.
