The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team was clicking on all cylinders Monday when it traveled to Habersham Central.
The Diamond Doggs dispatched of the Raiders in five innings with an 18-4 win in a game which opened subregion play. Travis Demeritte helped lead the way with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate including two home runs. Demeritte now has six homers this spring.
Several WBHS players contributed as Grayson Ivey went 3-for-4 with two doubles while driving in four runs. Dalton Carter was also 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI while Clayton Eames finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBI.
Taylor Keinat improved to 3-1 with the victory scattering four runs, six hits and four walks along with four strikeouts. Keinat helped his own cause by going 2-for-5 with a homer at the plate. He also drove in three runs.
The win improved the Diamond Doggs, who host Madison County Wednesday (today) at 5:55 p.m., to 7-4 overall.
The Apalachee High School Wildcats just missed a victory in their subregion debut Monday at Madison County.
The Red Raiders held on for a 4-3 win despite a 2-for-2 day by Apalachee’s Steven Adair and a 2-for-3 showing by Ronney Miller.
Chris Guthrie drew a walk and picked up a couple of RBI on sacrifice flies. Eric Morgan added a base hit.
For coach Mike Cavey, it was disappointing to see the win slip away.
“We gave up a three-run fourth inning to them and that was the difference in the game,” Cavey said. “Their hitters were real patient and did a good job of hitting the opposite way. Our hitters were not patient and we only had five hits, three of those were doubles, two by Ronney Miller.
The coach said Ryan Shorter pitched well but did not receive the necessary offensive support in order to record the road victory Monday.
“In two innings we had runners on second and third with no outs and both times we could only get one run across, Cavey said. “Our 1-3 batters were hitless, which didn’t help us either.”
Caleb Austin came in and pitched a “great” fifth and sixth innings, not allowing any runs, the coach said.
