JHS girls pick up second victory of season
Spring sports round-up
JEFFERSON’S Karla Carreno won three events Monday as the Lady Dragon track team edged Gainesville 71-65 at home.
Carreno took first in the high jump (5-2), long jump (15-1) and 100 meters (13.49).
She has returned to the Lady Dragons’ track and field team after a couple years away from the program.
“She’s been huge,” coach Chad Cheatam said. “She’s just now getting back into track shape.”
Before that, the Jefferson girls’ track team finished fourth out of 13 teams in Saturday’s Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) Invitational.
Bartek highlighted the day with a first-place finish in the discus with a throw of 104-02. Jefferson had several other strong finishes as well from Kasey McDonald (second, shot put, 33-11), Carreno (second, high jump, 4-10), Reese Bowles (second, ninth-and-10th-grade 1,600 meters, 6:10) and Eden Starnes (fourth, 100 meter dash, 13.47 seconds).
The 4 x 400 meter relay team took third.
GIRLS’ TRACK
•JACKSON CO. 78, EAST JACKSON 55, RABUN CO. 40: Jackson County’s girls’ track team – behind eight first-place finishes – won a tri-meet Tuesday at East Jackson for its third victory of the young season.
BOYS’ TENNIS
•JEFFERSON 3, GEORGE WALTON 2: Jefferson’s boys’ tennis team got three singles wins to pick up a road win at George Walton Tuesday.
Zach Bost won at no. 1 singles 8-4, while Blair Buffington and Ben Daniel picked up 8-1 victories at no. 2 and 3 singles respectively.
Prior to that, the Jefferson boys’ tennis team had very few problems in a 4-1 road win over Elbert County last Wednesday with three singles victories and a doubles win.
Bost and Buffington both breezed to 6-0, 6-0 victories at no. 1 and no. 2 singles respectively, while Daniel won 6-0, 6-3 at no. 3 singles.
The no. 1 doubles tandem of Jordan Tyler and Brandon Clabo pulled out a three-set win, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Prior to that, Jefferson’s girls edged Elbert County 3-2 last Wednesday on the road behind strong singles play.
Blankenship cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 1 singles, Taylor Bost won a three-set match at no. 2 singles (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) while McGarity won 6-3, 6-4 at no. 3 singles.
•JACKSON CO. 5, EAST JACKSON 0: The Jackson County girls’ tennis squad got back on track with a lopsided victory over rival East Jackson Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers were coming off a loss last week at Hart County.
Mafan won at no. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0 but the Jackson County girls’ tennis team fell at all other positions in a 4-1 setback. Coach Tammi Gowen noted that Morgan McLean played a competitive match at no. 3 singles, as well as the no. 2 doubles duo of Dorthy Maisonneuve and Jasmine Baker.
BOYS’ GOLF
•HART CO. 155, JEFFERSON 175: The Jefferson boys’ golf team (3-2) lost to Hart County Tuesday at Traditions of Braselton Golf Club despite a round of 38 from Patrick Hilton. That score put him in a three-way tie for low medalist of the day.
Rounding out the scoring were Josh Flowers (44), Blair Cain (46), Andrew Thompson (47) and Nick Stowe (47).
Before that, Jefferson lost 173-178 to Buford last Wednesday at Chateau Elan. Flowers led the Dragons with a 42, followed by Hilton (43), Jacob Price (46) and Thompson (47).
•JACKSON CO. 168, DAWSON CO. 183: Led by Thomas Whitley’s 37, Jackson County (5-2) posted a 15-stroke victory over Dawson County Monday on the road. Whitley earned low medalist honors.
“Hopefully, we are back on track,” coach Warren Strandridge said. The weather cost us over a week of practice and matches. Our scores started to get a little high. However, the guys went back to work and put in extra hours to get us back on track.”
Jackson County’s 168 Monday was its second-best round in school history. The Panthers shot a record 166 earlier this year.
Prior to the win over Dawson County, Jackson County lost to Hart County 174-186 Thursday at Traditions of Braselton Golf Club. Jared Scott led the Panthers with a 45.
Jackson County was coming off a 179-186 victory over Franklin County at Highland Walk a day earlier (March 16). York Delloyd both led the Panthers and earned low medalist honors with a round of 42. The victory over the Lions came after three weather-related match cancellations.
GIRLS’ GOLF
•JEFFERSON 96, HART CO. 115: Hanna Chapman led Jefferson (3-4) with a round of 47 Tuesday against Hart County at Traditions of Braselton Golf Club as she earned low medalist honors and the Lady Dragons picked up a decisive win. Kara Perry added a 49.
Before that, Jefferson’s girls’ golf team lost 95-99 to Buford last Wednesday at Chateau Elan. Chapman (49) and Paige Pate (50) provided the scoring for the Lady Dragons.
•JCCHS GIRLS WIN: Led by Jordan Garner and Emily Greeson, Jackson County girls’ golf team (3-3) picked up a four-stroke win over region foe Hart County Thursday at Traditions of Braselton Golf Club.
“We are beginning to play more consistent as expected,” coach Carl Cole said. “We are excited about the future and are optimistic about the rest of the season.”
A day earlier, Jackson County carded an 11-stroke victory over Franklin County at Highland Walk. Sparked by an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole, Garner enjoyed the low-round for the Lady Panthers. Greeson rounded out the scoring (individual scores weren’t available).

•EAST JACKSON 1, JACKSON CO. 0: Jackson County lost a tough one to rival East Jackson Tuesday night on penalty kicks, dropping the Panthers from the ranks of the unbeaten in subregion play.
Jackson County is now 3-1 in the Region 8-AA South standings. The Panthers lost five days earlier to Chestatee 3-0 at home.
•NORTH OCONEE 3, JEFFERSON 0: The Jefferson boys’ soccer team was shutout Tuesday on the road against fourth-ranked North Oconee, which leads Region 8-AA South.
Prior to that, Jefferson suffered its most lopsided defeat of the season Monday night, losing 8-1 to Madison County on the road. Chandler Schlutow scored the Dragons’ lone goal.
Jefferson scored early Monday, but the momentum didn’t last as the Dragons trailed 3-1 at the break.
“We had the opportunity to play a very close game even though the score does not say so,” coach Jacob Marble Marble said. “We as a team got discouraged and appeared to quit playing hard for part of the game and the score went up drastically.”
Marble pointed out that this was his team’s first loss this year by more than one goal.
Jefferson was coming off a 1-0 loss to Banks County last Wednesday at home in a game postponed from Tuesday. The Leopards got their lone goal in the first half.
“We had many opportunities to score throughout the game but could not capitalize,” Marble said.

•NORTH OCONEE 2, JEFFERSON 1 OT: Jefferson’s girls suffered a close loss on the road to North Oconee Tuesday. Carolyn Carreno provided the Lady Dragons’ lone goal.
Prior to that, the Lady Dragons blanked Madison County 3-0 Monday night for their third-straight shutout win in what coach Jacob Marble called one of their “best games yet.” Taylor Cramsey, Hannah Pasko and Carreno each scored one goal.
Before the victory over Madison County, Jefferson shutout Banks County 6-0 last Wednesday. Amanda Brattain scored twice as did Stephanie Lamm. Carreno and Shannah Malone each added one goal.

•GAINESVILLE 87, JEFFERSON 49: Jefferson’s boys lost in a dual meet with Gainesville at home Monday but the Dragons set new season marks in several events.
“Another great day for the boys team,” coach Tim Corbett said. “In all, we achieved 56 individual or relay team season records. “
Those setting new marks include Carson Newman winning the shot put (42-10), James Howard finishing sixth in the long Jump (18-0.75) and second in the pole vault (10-6), Josh Watkins placing second in the 400 meters (54.48 seconds) and third the 200 meters (24.95 seconds), Alec Jameson taking second in the 300 meters (46.98 seconds) and the 4 x 400 meter relay team 3:41.41 (Derrick Perkins, Jameson, Trae Timmerman and Watkins) finishing second.
Before that, Jefferson finished eighth out of 12 teams at Saturday’s Greater Atlanta Christian Invitational, getting season-best showings from several performers.
“We improved in multiple events – 13 – and in a few cases the improvement was tremendous,” Corbett said.
Freshman Mason Hamrick won the pole vault with a vault of 13 feet – six inches higher than his previous best.
Other highlights included Newman taking second in the discus with a heave of 132-01 (over 20 feet better than his previous best), Perkins placing third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40 seconds (six seconds faster than his previous best) and Kyle Kashuba, who finished seventh in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:54 (16 seconds faster than his previous best time in the mile). Timmerman also competed in the 1,600 meters, running a 5:08 – 11 seconds faster than his previous best for the year).
