Banks County’s soccer teams have hit a rough patch in the season as the teams fell to Dawson, Fannin and Lakeview Academy during the last week of play.
This week the teams were scheduled to play Jefferson on Tuesday. At press time results from that game were unavailable. Coming up, the teams head to Rabun County next Tuesday in another region competition. The girls start at 5:30 p.m. at Rabun, with the boys to follow.
The Lady Leopards run last week with the start of region play left the girls 0-7,0-2 so far in the season as Dawson and Fannin both defeated the team 8-0.
The girls started to turn things around on Friday against non-region opponent Lakeview, only falling 1-0.
“We had a complete turnaround against Lakeview last Friday. Our defense had an incredible game, and it was only in the last four minutes that Lakeview scored,” said coach Megan Williams. “We spread the field and moved off the ball much better than the games against either Dawson, or Fannin. The Lakeview match was just what we needed before the sub-region games coming up against Rabun and Union."
The team faces Union County March 25.
The boys fell to 2-6, 0-2 as they faced tough opponents last week.
“Last week we started off pretty good against Dawson,” said coach Mike Boomer. “They are a tough team, then we fell apart against Fannin County.”
Dawson defeated the Leopards only 2-0, while Fannin defeated the boys 3-1.
Against Lakeview, the Leopards had came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the match at the half. A self-goal error lost the game for Banks County, 3-2.
“We have struggled since the winter break, due to weather. It has been tough to practice, but I feel we are finally getting back to where we were before the break,” Boomer said.
