The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcat soccer team is coming off a strong week but coach Scott Bates knows a tough task awaits.
AHS will travel to Salem Friday for a match against a perennially tough opponent.
“In the last three years Salem had not lost a region match,” Bates said. “They have lost once this season but they will still be tough.”
Salem lost a 1-0 game to region foe Habersham Central, just one of several unusual outcomes this season, Bates said.
“Flowery Branch lost to Grady worse than we did Heritage, who everyone thought would win the region, has lost to Winder-Barrow,” the AHS coach said. “If we play our best soccer we can play with anybody.”
The Lady Wildcats were 4-2 overall going into this week and 1-0 in region after defeating Clarke Central 2-0 last week. AHS also defeated East Jackson 5-1 in non-region play Thursday as Shelby Carlyle, Andrea Cardona and Katy Nelson led the way. Nelson had a hat trick in the win.
“We went out and took care of business,” Bates said. “We are still looking to fine tune a few things. We did some things well against East Jackson and probably could have scored even more goals. Still it was a good week for us. When you are winning it always makes it better.”
Friday’s match at Salem is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. for Bates’ team.
