Track Leopards pushing ahead

With two of the first three meets canceled for the Banks County track team, the Leopards are still getting through the planning stages of the season as the team prepares for tough competition.

“We are pushing through the early, and cold, part of the season and preparing for the main part of the track schedule,” coach Paul Hoch said. “We are once again a young team with freshmen making up just over half of the spots on the roster.”

While freshmen hold several key events, it is the well known names that are expected to pace the teams.

For the boys, Ivan Diaz in the 1600m and 3200m will be looking to qualify for the state meet this year as he paces the Leopards through the season.

Following Diaz, other key contributors are expected to be Matthew Patton, Montana Kennedy, Todd McClure, and Abner McCright.

For the Lady Leopards, Maggie McCoy competing in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m is hunting for her own qualifying spot into the state meet. Returning hurdler Jayda Richey is another veteran track athlete that is expected to contribute to the team and help bring success as is newcomer Savannah Blalock

Last week, the boys competed at Jefferson in a tri-meet with Commerce. The boys were still finding their rhythms and scored 13 points. Jefferson won with 87 and Commerce earned 51.

Diaz paced the boys taking top honors in the 1600m run, 5:04:00; and first in the 3200m run, 11:07.00.

McCright earned fourth in the discus, 95’; and shot put 32’7.5”.

Kennedy finished fourth in the 100m dash, :12.97; and third in the 200m dash, :26.26.
