They say all good things must come to an end and that sad truth befell Madison County’s Lady Red Raiders at the region tournament Madison County faced Flowery Branch in the region quarterfinals.
The Lady Falcons entered the game 8-18 overall, but in a 10 point upset, knocked the defending region champions out of the tournament.
The loss of the region tournament means that for the first time in half a decade, Madison County’s girls will not be making an appearance in the AAAA state tourney.
Madison County coach Dan Lampe said that the Lady Red Raiders had a good season and it was disappointing to have it end like it did.
Flowery Branch defeated the girls, 51-41, advancing to defeat Loganville, 44-41 and taking runner-up in the region after falling to Clarke Central, 73-37.
Kayla Freeman led the Lady Red Raiders with 12 points, followed by Areil Sorrells with 10. Madison County ends the season 21-5 overall.
MC boys ousted in region tourney by Salem
Two points doesn’t seem like a lot until you are on the wrong side of the board. The Madison County Red Raiders found out how big of a difference two points makes as the boys were denied entrance into the Class AAAA state tournament after Salem defeated Madison County in the region quarterfinals last Thursday, 66-64.
Salem entered the region quarterfinals 10-14, while the 14-11 Red Raiders were eager for a win and entrance to the state playoffs.
Foul trouble for Madison County’s standout offense solution, Stan Maxwell, left him in the seat for much of the first half, scoring only two points before the break.
Maxwell came back in the second half and went on to score 19 points. Dominique Parrish led the team with 20 points, including six three’s to keep Madison County’s offense rolling.
Trae Burton earned a double-double, dropping in 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Josh Crouse scored nine to complete Red Raider scoring.
The loss ended Madison County’s season, 14-12.
