Red Raiders place two at state

Ruiz worked his way into the semi-finals after defeating the first round opponent South Paulding Friday by a 9-2 decision then defeated Southwest DeKalb’s competitor also by decision, 6-4.

Ruiz faced the Pope High School eventual state champion where he was knocked into the consolation bracket. He added another victory before taking fourth place in the final round against South Effingham for the battle for third.

Phillips also battled his way into the semi-finals, defeating Rome’s 125 lbs. wrestler in the opening round by fall.

In the second round Phillips advanced on decision to face Rockdale. In a tight match, Phillips was bumped into the consolation bracket as Rockdale advanced to secure the runner-up title.

In the consolation round, Phillips battled for fifth against Marist, earning sixth place.
