BASEBALL: WBHS outlasts Eastside

The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team put on a hitting display in Tuesday’s season opener at Eastside High School in Covington.

The Diamond Doggs (1-0) pounded their way to a 13-8 victory thanks, in part at least, to some big bats.

Austin Meyer came on in relief of Taylor Keinat and pitched three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run, striking out five, to earn the victory in Winder-Barrow’s season opener.

Offensively, the Bulldoggs recorded 13 hits, led by Travis Demeritte (two home runs, four RBI), Meyer (a 2-run homer), Dylan Ivey (two hits, two RBI), Grayson Ivey (one hit, two RBI) and Clayton Eames (two hits).

WBHS will play Lakeside-Evans at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Evans and will play South Effingham at 1:30 p.m. and Evans at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The early-season schedule is one of the toughest in recent memory, coach Brian Smith, said. The Bulldogg mentor wants to have his team experience top-level competition before entering the Region 8-AAAA battles later this spring.
