A 15-WIN campaign for Jefferson ended sooner than hoped Monday after a 55-42 region tournament loss to Banks County.
“Banks County is a much better team than their 10-win record … Hats off to their players,” coach Jason Gibson said.
The Lady Dragons (15-11) were able to limit the Lady Leopards’ top two scoring options but couldn’t put a handle on super-quick guard Deasha Beasley, who erupted for 22 points.
“I thought she played an outstanding game,” Gibson said. “I really thought she was the difference in the ball game.”
Banks County took control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring Jefferson 15-3 to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
Jefferson was already playing without its main post player, Bailey Boyd. Exacerbating matters was the illness of another one of the Lady Dragons’ other top scorers Kellie Goza, who played sparingly Monday.
“I would have liked to have played them with all our kids healthy and ready to play,” Gibson said.
The loss hurt, but Gibson pointed out that his young team was able to win 15 games and will return much of the same cast next year.
“I’m excited for next year and where this group could go,” Gibson said.
