Girls ‘blitzed’ by Clark Central, 60-28

Making it to the region tournament proved to be a bit bumpy for the Lady Red Raiders as Clarke Central usurped the top seed after a major defeat last Friday.
Prior to that game, Madison County defeated Habersham Central last Tuesday, 68-55.

Led by Elise Coberly with 22 points, Madison County’s offense was paced by Molly Glaze with 17 and Kayla Freeman with 16.

Riding the wave of victory into the big game with Clarke Central, Madison County’s wave hit the rocks as the Lady Gladiators took things out of the Lady Red Raiders’ hands.

“Clarke blitzed us,” said Lampe. “We didn't match their intensity on the court, and they really played lights out all night, both defensively and offensively.”
Holding Freeman to only four points and a handful of rebounds, Clarke dominated the boards.

The 60-27 defeat was Madison County’s lowest scoring game in region play and the second of the season.

Coberly had the Madsion County high score of eight points followed by Glaze with six. Sorrells and Freeman dropped in four and Fouche added two.

The defeat also affected the regular season closer with Apalachee as the Lady Red Raiders played just good enough to win the 47-39 contest.

“It was a game that just lacked focus,” Lampe said. “A lot of it was just that we had the Clarke hangover still.”

Apalachee led the first period 17-12 after a 10 point run. It was almost halfway through the second period before Madison County finally took the reigns in the game and led 30-2 at the break. The Lady Wildcats out scored Madison County, but still trailed after the third. The Lady Red Raiders put it away in the final minutes 11-9 for the win.

Coberly led the offense once again sinking 20 points, Freeman kept pace, scoring 15; Sorrells, five; Whieldon, three; Peeples, two; and Glaze, two.
