However, it’s what she does off the basketball court which is perhaps even more impressive. Witt’s mom works nights which means Brittany has to prepare her siblings for school each day and make sure they are on the bus.

“She is a unique young lady,” said her coach, Brenda Gilmore. “Not many teenagers would be able to take on that responsibility. However, she loves her family and it speaks volumes about her character as to what all she takes on. She is very unselfish.”

On the basketball court, Witt is described by her coach as someone who “loves the game.”

“Since I’ve been at Winder she’s always been one of our go-to players,” Gilmore said. “She realized this season she would have to score more. She didn’t have to do as much of that in the past because of the post people we had. However, she has taken on the role of scorer very well. She has put our team on her back and carried us.”

In her two games this past weekend, Witt scored 24 points against Madison County and 26 points against Habersham Central.

“I don’t even realize how many points she is scoring because it happens over the course of the game,” Gilmore said. “That’s the mark of a quality player.”

Her efforts make opposing coaches take notice as well.

“Brittany is an excellent leader on the floor,” said Apalachee High School coach Michael Parks. “She ignites her team by her ability and leadership skills. She does not mind being in pressure situations and putting the team on her back. She plays to win and that is what every good player should do.”

While the number of points she has been scoring probably gets the most attention, Gilmore praises the defensive effort of her standout.

“She does it all whether it’s defense, assists or rebounds,” Gilmore said. “She puts it all on the line. She is exhausted after each game. There are times I want to take her out but I know I can’t. Plus, she doesn’t want to come out of the game.”

While Witt may not be a vocal leader, she definitely leads by example with her actions.

“She doesn’t yell at her teammates,” Gilmore said. “She just does what she has to do to make the team successful. If it means taking charge or making a steal then she is going to do it.”

With the Lady Bulldoggs approaching the Region 8-AAAA tournament, Gilmore said Witt needs help to make the team stay alive.

“We need her to continue to play well and I know she will,” the coach said. “We need others to stay out of foul trouble to get our inside/outside game going. That’s what will help us as we get on down the road.”
