Savage Named Coach Of The Year

Before a crowd that included some of the top football coaches in the Southeastern Conference, former Commerce head football coach Steve Savage accepted an award last Tuesday from Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith.

Smith presented just the second Atlanta Falcons High School Coach of the Year Award to Savage, who ended a 35-year-coaching career last December. The occasion was a College Coaches Luncheon hosted by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association in Forsyth.

“Steve is highly respected by coaches statewide and has great respect from the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association,” said Terry Rogers, GACA’s executive director. “He is one of many, but he’s always done things the right way. GACA is proud to announce that Steve Savage is the winner of the Atlanta Falcon High School Football Coach of the Year Award.”

Rogers pointed out that Smith had flown into Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport at 7:00 that morning from Hawaii, and drove straight to Forsyth for the presentation. Savage was chosen for the award by GACA.

He added that among the estimated 330 people in attendance, “We had probably 100 college coaches — all the people who recruit in Georgia.”
