It was a good week for the Commerce Lady Tigers who beat Oglethorpe, Social Circle and Lakeview Academy, putting together their best winning streak of the season and locking up the number two seed in 8-A North.
Commerce was scheduled to travel to Towns County on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Tigers will try to end the season on a winning note Friday night when they host Tallulah Falls, which is winless in region play.
Commerce won an earlier pairing 54-30 on Jan. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Oglethorpe
On Tuesday, the Lady Tigers hosted Oglethorpe County.
Oglethorpe came out ready to play, holding Commerce to just two points in the first quarter. But the Lady Tigers fought back and in the third quarter, Commerce outscored the Lady Patriots 18-2 and went on to put up a 24-point lead. In the end, Commerce picked up the 48-22 victory.
Jaz Grier led the offense with a season-high 25 points. Vanessa Chandler and Drea Mathis scored six each and Madison Maddox scored four.
“Jaz played really well after a slow start in the first half,” said coach Eddie McCurley. “I was more proud of her 14 rebounds. When she goes to the boards, good things happen for our team.
“Drea stepped up and had one of her better games,” he added.
Social Circle
On Thursday, Commerce traveled to Social Circle for a game postponed from Jan. 15.
Social Circle jumped ahead early, handing the Lady Tigers a 10-point deficit, but Commerce rallied to make it 15-8 by the end of the first. The Lady Tigers fought to stay in the game, despite the Redskins hitting four three-pointers in the second quarter, leaving Commerce with a nine-point deficit.
The Lady Tigers quickened the pace in the second half, rebounding well and scoring transition baskets. By the end of the third, Commerce led 40-32. The Lady Tigers would go on to win 53-45.
Grier led with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Lily Mather scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Hannah Davis scored 10 points. Chandler added eight, followed by Mathis with five, Erica Greene with three and Allie Morgan with two.
Lakeview
On Saturday, the Lady Tigers hosted Lakeview Academy.
After falling behind early, Commerce came back to take a 13-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Tigers led 20-17 at the half, and in the third period expanded the lead to 10 points en route to a 50-37 win.
