Sights on Region for Red Raiders

With the first big step on the path to a state title starting Friday at Habersham, Madison County has several challengers to consider as the individual wrestlers compete against tough teams.

The Region tourney begins at 5 p.m. Friday and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.

Alongside host Habersham, Madison County will face Heritage, Clarke Central and region duals champion Loganville, just to name a few.

“Our region is very tough,” said coach Richie Houston.

The Red Raiders are not pushovers, as the team proved last Saturday in Elberton at the Inferno Invitational hosted by Elbert County.

Madison County took top honors with a first-place finish, 90 points ahead of the runner-up. The Red Raiders had several weight class winners including top honors for Max Nash (119 lbs.), Cody Phillips (125 lbs.), Isaac Ruiz (145 lbs.), Kyle Bates (160 lbs.) and Matt Dove (215 lbs.).

Finishing as runner-ups, Steven Resby (171 lbs.) and Kyle Gordon (189 lbs.) had several good matches.

Tanner Gordon (112 lbs.), Donnie Harper (135 lbs.) and Jeremy Colley (285 lbs.) earned third-place honors, while Tanner Johnson (171 lbs.) and Andrew McCannon (189 lbs.) finished fourth.
