Madison County’s Lady Red Raiders finally get a shot at Clarke Central this week as the Lady Red Raiders enter the final leg of the regular season on the road. The teams were scheduled to meet earlier, but weather forced the postponement of the earlier game, making this the first meeting.
Madison County (5-0,17-1) looks to continue its tear through region opponents against Clarke Central (5-0, 14-3) Gladiators in a 7 p.m. game.
At the start of the region schedule, coach Dan Lampe said Clarke Central was one of the biggest opponents for Madison County.
With the two teams battling for control in the sub-region, Friday’s game will be a force of wills to see which team wants it more. Last season, Clarke Central won both meetings between the teams, but just barely scraped past Habersham, 44-41, this week. Madison County dominated Habersham last Friday night, 59-32.
Following Friday’s throw-down, Madison County returns Tuesday to face Apalachee on the road. Apalachee (1-2, 9-7) has not won in the past four meetings of the schools. Tuesday’s games starts at 6 p.m.
Last week, Madison County wasn’t pulling any punches as the Lady Red Raiders showed why they are the top set of Raiders in the sub-region, defeating Habersham Central Lady Raiders 59-32. The win over Habersham improved Madison County to 5-0 in the sub-region.
Assistant coach Jackson Russum said, “We dominated in the first quarter and set the tone of the game.”
It was an uncontested 17-point run for the Lady Red Raiders in the opening minutes that left Habersham reeling. Habersham did score in the second period, putting up 14 points, but the Lady Red Raiders responded by adding 20 points to extend the lead to 37-14 at the break.
The third period was open for Habersham to try and get started, but both teams’ defenses were working as Habersham outscored Madison County, 9-5.
Haley Peeples lit up the net in the final minutes hitting five two-fers, bringing her game total to eight. Peeples led the scoring with 16 points with Kayla Freeman following with 15. Juleigh Fouche put up 10 points followed by Elizabeth Whieldon, six points; Areil Sorrells, five points; Molly Glaze, four; and Elise Coberly, three.
Saturday, Madison County added another win over non-region opponent Hart County, 52-46.
Glaze led the scoring with 18 points; Freeman with 15 points; and Coberly with 12 points were the leading
