After an unintended week off due to the snow and ice, Madison County’s Lady Red Raiders returned to action Saturday, picking up another victory.
The home victory over Cedar Shoals, 57-39, showed that the Lady Red Raiders are prepared to take care of business.
“We did what we wanted to do,” coach Dan Lampe said. “I thought our entire effort level increased as the girls see the pertinence of sub-region play. We are starting to see the end in sight.”
Keeping their eye on the goal of a region title, Madison County prepares for three home games over the weekend and into next week.
The next sub-region opponent is Habersham Central, Friday at 7 p.m.
“Habersham has won a lot of games so far this year, and they have a big inside presence and run a good motion offense,” Lampe said.
Habersham has won 13 games to date, but has yet to pick up a sub-region win. Madison County is looking to add a fifth straight sub-region win and maintain a winning streak over the Habersham Central Raiders. The Lady Red Raiders haven’t dropped a game to Habersham since 2006, but Lampe isn’t going to let the girls coast while practicing for Friday’s game.
“I see everybody as a potential trip-up for us if we don’t get ready for the game and we don’t bring the effort,” he said. “I like our chances if we bring the effort, but if we don’t, any team in our sub-region can beat us.”
After facing a sub-region challenger Friday, Madison County takes a break from the region hunt to face Hart County. With a 6 p.m. tip-off, the Lady Red Raiders look to repeat an earlier season performance with another win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Next week, it’s back to sub-region play as Madison County hosts Flowery Branch, Jan. 25. After opening against Flowery Branch with a 54-40 win at the start of the month on the road, the Lady Red Raiders hope lighting strikes twice just at home this time. Tuesday’s game starts at 6 p.m.
The postponed games from last week against Clarke Central and Apalachee are still “in a holding pattern,” according to Lampe.
It is likely that the games will be played at the end of the season just before the region tournament, which would be condensed into a one week schedule instead of the current two-week format.
