It's been said that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
It also only counts in high school football, as the East Jackson Eagles missed winning their season opener by about a minute and a half. The final score was 28-27.
After a game that had been close all night, the Eagles had taken a 27-21 lead with about six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
But with one minute left, the Spartans connected on a 31-yard touchdown to take the lead, and hold on for the win, their first since Oct. 12 of last year.
The Eagles will play not only their home opener next week, but also their first region football game in school history on Friday, as they play host to the Fannin County Rebels. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
