Wrestling: JCCHS finishes third at area duals

Jackson County proved its status as one of the better teams in area duals competition but won’t be moving on to state.

The Panthers finished third at the area duals over the weekend – going 3-1 – but only the top two squads move on to the Class AA meet, which has been postponed until Feb. 25-26.

After beating Elbert County 43-23 and losing to Banks County 40-23, Jackson County picked up wins over Fannin County 47-31 and Dawson County 49-30 to take home the third-place consolation prize.

Zach Moore, Ryan Shekey, Justin Brewer and Austin McDonald all went 4-0 in the event.

The loss to Banks County in round two cost the Panthers a spot in the finals, however.

“We definitely wanted to finish in the top two, but third is better than nothing,” head coach Jason Powers said.

Jackson County’s next individual tournament will come Jan. 21-22 at the East Metro at Alcovy High School.
