The Commerce Lady Tigers hoped to open up their new gymnasium at CHS with a strong start but they lost to Towns County and Jefferson Friday and Saturday night.
They will host Prince Avenue Christian this Friday in pursuit of their first win in the new gym, weather permitting.
Prince Avenue is 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the region.
Towns County
Commerce knew it had a tough game ahead. Towns entered the game at 11-1 on the season, averaging about 70 points per game.
The Tigers got off to a poor start and never recovered. They were down 16-1 after the first quarter, with Erica Greene’s free throw providing not only the first CHS points in the new gym, but also the only Tiger points of the quarter.
Things didn’t improve much. Towns led 29-5 at the half and coasted to a 62-18 victory.
Jaz Grier and Hannah Davis scored four points each.
“We had a very poor first quarter,” said coach Eddie McCurley. “We just didn’t shoot the ball very well, and we didn’t execute very well. Our turnovers killed us.”
Jefferson
The Lady Tigers fared better the following night against Jefferson.
McCurley decided to shake up its lineup, moving sophomore Madison Maddox and junior Erica Greene into the starting lineup.
The moves appeared to pay some dividends, as Commerce jumped to 15-12 lead after one period and led 30-27, at the half.
But the third quarter proved to be the Achilles heel for the Lady Tigers as they scored just three points, allowing the Dragons to build a 10 point lead. Jefferson put the game away, 57-40.
Grier led the offense with 15 points, followed by Vanessa Chandler, nine and Maddox six.
