Madison County’s varsity basketball teams take the week off from play for the Christmas holidays, but will return next week as the Red Raiders and the Lady Red Raiders hit the hardwood at Oconee County for the Warrior Holiday Classic.
The tournament runs Monday, Dec. 27, through Wednesday, Dec. 29.
Madison County’s girls will open tourney play against Jackson County at 3 p.m. Monday. The Red Raiders will follow the girls as Madison County takes the Heritage boys at 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Lady Red Raiders open against the Central Gwinnett girls in a 1:30 p.m. match-up. Later in the afternoon, Madison County boys take on Hebron Christian. Tip-off for the boys at 4:30 p.m.
In the final day of the tournament, Hebron Christian girls will get a shot at the Madison County girls in 3 p.m. action. And in the final game of the evening, Madison County boys take on the hosting Oconee County boys for an 8 p.m. showdown.
After the Warrior Holiday Classic, Madison County is off until Jan. 4, when the teams push into the second half of the season with a home contest against Buford.
The Lady Red Raiders open at 5:30 p.m. with the boys’ game following in the last non-region game for Madison County before the hunt for region victories. Madison County begins region play Jan. 7, taking on Flowery Branch on the road.
Leading into the break, Madison County faced Franklin County at Carnesville last Friday.
The Lady Red Raiders improved their streak to 8-0 after pulling out a fourth quarter win over the Lady Lions. Madison County led at the half, 21-17, but were overtaken in the third quarter, 36-29.
Down by nine in the final minutes, Madison County regrouped and the girls surged ahead to earn the win, 50-44.
Earning her seventh double-double of the season, Kayla Freeman led the scoring with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while the other scorers were pretty evenly tied across the book. Julie Fouche and Areil Sorrells scored 8 points apiece, while Elise Coberly put up 7 points, followed by Haley Peeples with 6 points. Other scorers were Molly Glaze, 5 points; and Elizabeth Whieldon, 4 point.
The Red Raiders on the other hand are still looking to find their groove on the court. The boys move to a 3-5 record before the holidays, after a 51-43 loss to Franklin County.
Standouts for the Red Raiders were Domonique Parrish, leading the Madison County scoring with 13 points; Stan Maxwell earned a double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points.
