David Sokol was able to smile after this one.
Sokol’s Winder-Barrow High School varsity boys basketball team defeated visiting Loganville 61-41 Tuesday night helping take away — at least partially— the bad taste the coach had from the previous time his team was on the floor.
Jamias Davis scored a game-high 20 points as the Bulldoggs took control of the game early on their way to the victory. Qua Flanigan added 13 and Travis Demerritte finished with nine.
“It was great to get this one,” said Sokol, whose team was defeated by Monroe Area Saturday night. “Quality defense and being patient on offense were the keys for us. We got some good looks and were able to knock them down.”
Davis was the key offensively, scoring the team’s first eight points as WBHS jumped out to a 15-6 advantage after the first quarter. Davis started the scoring with a 3-point play followed by a basket from 3-point range and a field goal, all in the first two minutes of action.
Trent Burton’s 3-pointer with 3:50 left in the opening quarter also helped signal how the game was going to turn out. Loganville never led in the game and trailed 25-14 at halftime and 44-28 after the third quarter.
Sokol said he was pleased with the overall play of his team Tuesday night.
“We’ve been preaching the same thing all year,” the coach said. “We had great execution tonight and the players were unselfish on the court. They were looking to get their teammates involved. I’m glad everything worked for us tonight.”
D.J. Jackson added six points while Burton finished with five points Tuesday night in a balanced scoring attack. Dante Jones added four points while Jordan Banks and Maurice Dixon-Smith both had two.
The Bulldoggs will host Monroe Area Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of a game played less than a week ago. In that contest, the Purple Hurricanes defeated WBHS 52-41.
“We’ll get back at it and see if we can make the outcome different this time,” Sokol said. “We just didn’t play well enough in the first game. Hopefully, this win tonight will give us some confidence going into Friday.”
The team will then be off until Dec. 18.
