Tigers Cross Country Team Prepares For Season

The Commerce Tiger Cross Country team continues to prepare for its upcoming season. The Tigers will open Sept. 9 at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

Commerce cross country coach Mark Hale said he has about 10 total runners between his boys and the girls teams.

His top runners for the boys so far have been sophomore Ethan Thomas, junior Juan Toribio and sophomore Zach Scannell. Senior Hannah Duckett has been the top runner for the girls in practice so far.

“The weather has been a lot kinder to us this year than last year,” Hale said. “We’ve been able to get some good practice time in.”

Despite the good fortune with the weather, Hale is realistic about where his team is right now as it prepares for the Sept. 9 meet match with the Eagles.

“We have a long way to go before we are ready to run in a competitive meet,” he said.

After opening on Sept. 9, the Tigers will travel to Rabun Gap on Sept. 16, Banks County on Sept. 23, and will start the October with a meet at Athens Academy.

Commerce will then take part in the Mountain Invitational on Oct. 7, before traveling back to Banks County on Oct. 21, and then they will wrap up the regular season with the MainStreet Invitational in Jefferson on Oct. 30.

The Region Meet is scheduled for Oct. 30 at Athens Academy. The Cross Country season will wrap on up Nov. 8 with the State Meet in Carrollton.
