The Commerce Mat Tigers finally got their 2010-2011 season underway this week, playing host to Jefferson and Madison County.
Details of the event were not available as of press time.
Commerce next travels across the river to face a host of local teams, including Jackson County, East Jackson, Banks County and Madison County at the Panther Invitational at JCCHS Friday and Saturday.
Commerce coach Kendall Love said this year’s Panther Invitational will be the toughest it’s ever been.
“There are highly ranked teams in it from all classifications, with 27 total teams,” he said. “Our young guys will get valuable mat time against tough opponents.”
Commerce started the week — and season — hosting Jefferson and Madison County Tuesday afternoon.
Love said his team was starting the season with some very tough competition.
“Peachtree Ridge withdrew from the competition because they had scheduled too many matches for the week,” he said. “However, Jefferson and Madison County will be very tough opponents. Jefferson is ranked number 1 in AA and Madison County has the best team it’s had in a long time. We are going to have to wrestle these two without several starters because they cannot be in their weight class yet due to their descent plan, which is something new GHSA is requiring this year.”
