The Commerce Mat Tigers are set to get their 2010-11 campaign underway next week, as they will play host to Peachtree Ridge, Madison County and Jefferson on Nov. 30.
The Tigers are returning to action after a successful 2009-10 season that saw them take third at state, with 10 of 14 competitors placing in the finals.
Commerce coach Kendall Love said things are going well so far in practice.
“We got the football players out on Wednesday and they jumped right in and have worked hard,” he said. “We will have about 35 kids on the roster this year which is the most we have had since I’ve been here.”
Love said the transition from football to wrestling in pretty tough the first week or so for his grapplers.
“They normally pick it up and transition pretty well after the first week,” he said. “We open up against some formidable opponents on Nov. 30, so we are just trying to work hard and improve daily.”
Love said this season should prove to be interesting.
“We will have a good mix of upperclassmen that have been battle-tested as well as talented underclassmen who have a ton of potential,” he said. “We have a tough schedule but I feel like we will be prepared come area and state.”
Following the Nov. 30 meet, the Tigers will travel to JCCHS to take part in the Panther Invitational on Dec. 3-4, then play host to Riverside and Morgan County on Dec. 8.
Commerce will travel to Apalachee for the round Robin Duals on Dec. 10-11, then return home to face Flowery Branch and Elbert County on Dec. 17.
The Tigers will travel to Danielsville for the Madison County Duals on Dec. 18, then to Elberton for the Elbert County Duals on Dec. 21. Following a break for Christmas, the team will travel to Amicalola for the Amicalola Classic on Dec. 30-31.
